Our class recently finished the book Frindle by Andrew Clements. In the story, the main character, Nick, invents a new word for pen (frindle). The students learned a lot about vocabulary and had a lot of fun listening to the story. On the day we finished the book, I thought it would be fun to invent our own words with a new "frindle" for each student!

Math: Data Collection and Graphing
This week in math we have focused on collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Students have been exposed to horizontal, vertical, and double bar graphs. They set up survey questions and collected their own data. Here are a couple examples of the graphs students constructed after their surveys were conducted.
Reading: 40 Book Challenge and Read to Someone
Hopefully you have been discussing our 40 Book Challenge with your 4th grader. I have seen students filling out their graph and book list (a copy of this is attached on this website under "FORMS and LINKS"), and I have had several conversations with excited students!
We are practicing fluency and comprehension with "Read to Self". Students have a chance to read with a partner which strengthens their oral reading skills. They also have the opportunity to discuss the books they are reading which sharpens reading comprehension!
Science: WATER!
We have been learning about some of the properties of water. Recently we've been doing some experiments to help us learn about surface tension. Ask your students about this!
A great start to the school year!
Our class has had a wonderful start to the year! We have spent a lot of time learning about each other and working as a team to set up the year to be successful learners.

Class Read Aloud
Our class is three chapters in to the book Pie by Sarah Weeks. The book is about a woman, Polly, who bakes world-famous pies. There are different pie recipes throughout the book that the students want me to take pictures of and email to you! This story has the kids (and me) on the edge of our seats at the end of each chapter. Today we had a 20 minute discussion about wonderings, connections, questions, and predictions. It was awesome; please ask them about this book! A few of them have already asked me where I bought it and how they can get their hands on it:)
